Classified as a Monument of National Interest by the state of Portugal, Palácio Belmonte underwent an exhaustive six year restoration by owner and ecologist Frederic Coustals before being unveiled as a luxury property that upholds the highest level of preservation out of any other property in Europe. Step by step, the palace became a living luxury hotel upholding the principles of sustainability and restoration rules established by the Chart of Venice. The hotel has just 10 suites, capturing the interior beauty of its tiles and volumes. All of the main reception rooms and the 10 suites opened to the guests of the Palacio, contain 59 rare panels painted under the direction of Masters Manuel dos Santos in 1725 and Valentim de Almeida. 3,800 original blue glazed tiles "Azulejos" were removed, carefully restored and then put back across Palácio Belmonte.
