Luxury Greek Island Hotel Calilo Debuts Renewed Resort Experiences

Situated on the unspoiled island of Ios in the Greek Cyclades, the family-owned luxury resort Calilo will debut refreshed accommodations and enhancements on June 1, ahead of the 2022 summer season. Guests will be welcomed to the remarkable island experience with reimagined EOS collection suites, a brand new spa and wellness center, and newly-appointed Executive Chef Alexandros Tsiotinis who will oversee the resort’s culinary offerings and launch two signature dining concepts.

Calilo, part of sustainable hospitality company LuxurIOS, is the crown jewel accommodation for the most discerning travelers who visit the island of Ios. Owners Angelos Michalopoulos and Vassiliki Petridou started the tourism project out of their strong love for the island, and have since gone on to develop and operate several hotels, beach estates, villas and lounges, while maintaining the land’s integrity and natural beauty. The enhancements coming to Calilo reflect the personal vision of Michalopoulos and Petridou, inspired by their design ethos as artists and commitment as hoteliers to deliver an aesthetically unique product that respects the breathtaking traditional ways of cycladic architecture while accommodating the needs of the modern traveler.

“What makes the island of Ios so special is the privacy and pristine beauty, providing a secluded sanctuary in the heart of the iconic Greek cyclades,” said owner Angelos Michalopoulos. “Calilo’s latest additions will provide guests with elevated experiences that span across multiple outlets, where they can experience the island’s mesmerizing magic and become immersed in a destination of reconnection and renewal.”

Organized as a three-level wellness center, the gym occupying the first two floors will include luxurious personal saunas, one indoor and two outdoor pools looking over Papas Beach, and expansive space for fitness classes and meditation. On the third floor, Calilo’s new state-of-the-art spa will revolve around the naturally calming energy of water. Drawing inspiration from this ethos, the six new massage rooms will feature waterfalls to ensure a calming and cathartic experience for guests. The treatments will spotlight traditional Greek products, including olive oil sourced from Calilo's own olive trees which were saved as part of the brand’s Elektra Olive Tree project. CULINARY REFRESH

On the culinary front, Calilo has selected Executive Chef Alexandros Tsiotinis to lead the reinvigoration of their gastronomy program. Tsiotinis is the owner and chef of CTC Urban Gastronomy in Athens, and will bring his crafted cuisine and artistry to Calilo with two new restaurant concepts: a relaxed, Mediterranean beach taverna and a fine-dining experience, CHES.

CHES stands for “Celebrate Happiness and Explain the Sadness until you’re not sad any more,” and will take guests through a gastronomic journey to experience different flavors, aromas and textures that tell a story. The menu will consist of 33 dishes, inspired by the 33 islands in the Cyclades. With a dining philosophy deeply rooted in the Ancient Greek belief that a healthy body supports a healthy mind, the new culinary offerings will spotlight the many benefits of a traditional Mediterranean diet. The dishes will showcase exceptional ingredients like organic produce from the onsite garden, fresh honey from the beehives supply, locally-sourced goat cheese, and extra virgin olive oil produced from their very own olive groves which have been conserved and saved from being sold for wildfire in Athens as part of the Elektra olive tree project.

Focus On Sustainability With Rewilding, Conservation and Eco-Friendly Development

Situated on the unspoilt island of Ios in the Greek Cyclades, the family-owned luxury resort Calilo was created with sustainability and ecotourism at the heart of their ethos. Part of the sustainable hospitality company LuxurIOS, owners Angelos Michalopoulos and Vassiliki Petridou started the tourism project and opened Calilo out of their strong love for the island. The family’s goal is for guests to experience the island’s mesmerizing magic and become immersed in a destination of reconnection and renewal, while also maintaining the land’s integrity and natural beauty. See below for a snapshot of Calilo’s sustainability efforts–

  • Rewilding Efforts: Donkeys are considered to be an extinct species in Greece, especially in the Cyclades, therefore, the owners have created a donkey sanctuary dedicated for their preservation. They also have rescued dogs who were affected by the wildfires in Athens.
  • Elektra Olive Tree Project: The family has invested efforts in several conservation projects including the Elektra olive tree project, where they have planted over 60,000 plants from around the island to restore the habitat that had previously been burned by wildfire and land deforestation, including 550 ancient olive trees (some more than 300 yrs old) which were saved from being sold for wildfire in Athens.
  • Eco-Friendly Development: The family has left 95% of the land undeveloped, in order to sustain Ios’ natural beauty. The land that has been developed has been done so in an environmentally-friendly manner with construction material extracted from the ground of the actual building site including beautiful marble and stone granite.
  • Earth Day Offer: To celebrate Earth Day, Calilo is running a limited-time offer that provides guests 10% off all suites for bookings now through May 1, 2022. Calilo will also name one of their ancient olive trees in the guests’ honor and donate 10% of the booking value to the non-profit organization “ΚΙΝΗΜΑ” for the protection of the South Aegean Islands against Climate Change.
