Miami Beach EDITION: Ian Schrager and Marriott Reinvent the Urban Resort for the 21st Century

In many ways, the new EDITION represents the most important step forward for the city since the moment when Schrager's last Miami hotel, the Delano, opened in 1992–and changed everything. For decades, the great mid-20th century resort city and its hotels had slipped into stasis and decline, as the jet age allowed vacationing Americans to flock to Europe and the Caribbean in place of their old Florida standby. But in the early 1990s, Schrager sensed that something exciting and fresh was emerging in the historic Art Deco blocks of South Beach: a new population, and new kind of cultural energy. Building on that realization, he created the Delano–and suddenly Miami Beach was on the map again, the hotel's cutting-edge design and stylish atmosphere drawing sophisticated travelers back to the city for the first time in a generation.
Two decades later, the Miami Beach EDITION represents the next great seminal event in the life of the city. No longer merely a getaway spot for people seeking a break from winter, Miami has emerged in the last two decades as world-class capital, a 24-hour gateway city whose cultural scenes–in art, architecture, music, fashion, cuisine, design–now rival any of the world's urban centers, and attract people from every corner of the globe.

Market at EDITION is a revolutionary new concept offering fast gourmet food around the clock, meaning guests no longer have to rely on room service. Inspired by the great century-old markets in Madrid and Barcelona, Market is a modern take on the classic Miami Beach eatery and can be your first stop of the day and your last stop at night. Part patisserie, part boulangerie and part salumeria, bustling counters serve everything from pizzas, sandwiches and ceviche to wine, smoothies and fresh juices. This never-seen-before hotel restaurant concept lends itself well to The Miami Beach EDITION, a next generation urban resort, with guests picking up gourmet snacks for afternoons at the beach and coffees to go before exploring the city.
At the hotel's signature restaurant, Matador Room, Chef Jean-Georges offers his distinctive modern interpretation of Latin cuisine influenced by Spanish, Caribbean and South American flavors. The seasonal menu is composed of small and large plates including; Raw Shaved Florida Red Snapper with Green Chili Dressing and Gulf White Shrimp in Agua Diablo, Banana and Almonds; Peekytoe Crab and Corn Fritters and Whole Roasted Local Fish, Olive Oil, Sea Salt and Fennel Pollen. The Matador Room will also serve breakfast, with local and organic ingredients in delicious egg dishes, waffles and pancakes, and smoked meats and fish. A different fresh-pressed green juice will be served daily.
Tropicale, the outdoor resort area, named in honor of the historic 1950s Havana nightclub that inspired it, offers casual alfresco dining with a palate of fresh, light menu of both sweet and savory selections including; crispy calamari and citrus-chili dip and Maine lobster grilled cheese on brioche, cinnamon beignets with passion fruit dipping sauce and ice cream sandwiches. Guests can enjoy a drink under a romantic pergola, or sit in the Terrace Bar overlooking the pool area, or wander a little ways–past a second, even larger landscaped pool–to find a private beach, complete with an outdoor movie screen, an outdoor fire pit and a ping pong area. Weekends see the space come alive with lawn games and live music.
Overlooking the hotel's pool deck, at the adjoining Matador Bar stands a solid walnut floating bar at the center of the room. Providing bespoke crafted cocktails, the tenured barmen utilize the freshest ingredients to expertly prepare each drink with exemplary service.
