Most Exotic Locations For Underwater Photography

If it weren't for spectacular underwater photos most people wouldn't have any idea what beauty lies beneath the ocean. But even talented photographers need inspiration from time to time. If you’re a scuba diver who likes taking underwater shots, you’ll love our 5 exotic locations for underwater photography.

St. Tropez

This small village in the south of France receives millions of visitors annually. If you want to explore the region but avoid the crowds, the best way to do it is by boat. This also happens to be one of the most exotic locations for underwater photography in the Med.

Clear waters, abundant marine life, and several wreck dive sites make this an underwater photographer’s dream. The Rubis, a sunken submarine now surrounded by sea life, is one of the highlights.

Stunning sail and motorboats are available for rental in St Tropez. A sailboat charter here will get you to where all the best underwater shots are. Sailing with a skipper allows you to concentrate on preparing for your dive. But unskippered charters are available as well.

Costa Rica

Planning a trip to Costa Rica? This is one of the best locations in the world for snorkeling, freediving, and scuba diving. It boasts rich and diverse marine life, making it an excellent spot for some epic underwater shots.

You’ll enjoy great wide-angle shot opportunities at the Catalinas and Bat islands, where the waters are teeming with fish of all kinds.

Costa Rica is known for its abundance of coral reefs, known as the ‘rainforests of the seas’. The best-preserved reefs are to be found at Cocos Island. They offer sanctuary to many marine species.

Catalina Island

US-based divers don’t have to stray very far to have a fantastic underwater experience. Catalina Island, in the Southern Channel islands of Southern California, is an underwater photographer’s dream come true.

Large, lush kelp forests and scores of sea life offer many photo opportunities. For a glimpse of magnificent hydrocoral in rich purple hues, advanced divers should make their way to Farnsworth Banks.

On the eastern side of Catalina, the ‘Italian Gardens’ section offers great wide-angle shots of giant Black Sea Bass from July through to October.

Raja Ampat

This one may not be as easy to get to as the above destinations. But a trip to Raja Ampat in Indonesia is well worth it.

This archipelago is right in the midst of the Coral Triangle, a maze of underwater caverns, countless marine species, and gorgeous coral.

The Coral Triangle is the world’s most significant reef system. Here, 30% of the world’s total number of coral reefs, and  76% of their species, are represented. Fifteen species of coral reside here that are not found anywhere else.

Red Sea

Saudi Arabia has become a hub for tourism, famous for fabulous displays of wealth and extravagance. And yet, most of its wealth lies hidden under the Red Sea. Is a Red Sea diving experience on your bucket list? If not, it will be now.

Whether you’re into shipwrecks or sharks, you’ll find some of the best underwater photography locations right here. There are several shipwrecks in the area, but the Ann Ann in the Jeddah area is one of the best wreck dive spots in the region.

It has become one with the surrounding coral reefs, and shoals of fish have made this their own personal hideout. Even Blue Spotted Stingrays and White-tip Sharks have been known to seek shelter and food here. If you’re an experienced diver, you’ll love exploring this wreck, finding many opportunities for thrilling underwater shots.
