New Boutique Hotel Amparo Opens in San Miguel de Allende

Hotel Amparo, San Miguel de Allende’s newest luxury boutique hotel, officially opened its doors on January 1, 2019. Situated in the heart of this historic colonial city, the hotel offers travelers an intimate retreat featuring just five guest suites, a high-end coffee bar and a rooftop wine bar. “Amparo” translates to shelter, and coincidentally is the given first name of owner Amparo Mariana Barran de Goodall.

Hotel Amparo’s passionate owners, Taylor Goodall and Mariana Barran de Goodall, divide their time between Mexico and the United States and sought to create a residential-style hideaway influenced by their travels around the world and offering amenities and experiences currently unmatched in San Miguel de Allende.

The owners tasked Texas-based designer Aaron Rambo to bring their design vision to reality. The building, historically the mayor’s private residence, dates back more than 300 years.  The interior spaces were stripped to provide a clean backdrop to best showcase both the original Spanish colonial-style architecture and the mid-century furnishings sourced from around the world; including France, India and Denmark. Rambo aimed to pay homage to the past while reflecting San Miguel’s evolution into the international city it is today.

Tall dark wood-plank doors open to reveal original reddish-brown tiles and beams, bright white walls, original wood paneling and a vibrant yellow-green-blue-and-red color scheme. All of the guest suites are situated around one of two courtyards and feature bedding, hand towels and linens custom-made by Hibiscus Linens, the traditional textile and needlework company owned by Mrs. Barran de Goodall.

At the heart of the hotel is the high-end coffee bar featuring San Miguel’s first, and only, La Marzocco espresso machine. Hotel Amparo aims to provide the finest cup of coffee in the city using Mexican-grown and roasted beans sourced from Mexico City’s BUNA.  BUNA also supplies artisanal honey and chocolates for Hotel Amparo. The coffee bar offers terrace seating and is open daily to hotel guests and the general public.

Additionally, Hotel Amparo will feature a rooftop wine bar with a specially curated wine list offering imported fine wines unavailable anywhere else in Mexico.  The list heavily features producers emphasizing natural wine making processes.

Guests of Hotel Amparo will also enjoy exclusive experiences such as tours of local markets with resident artisans, culinary classes in the hotel’s teaching kitchen and experiential workshops. Since San Miguel is known for its art scene, the hotel will provide gallery concierge services to assist with the purchasing and shipping of must-have finds.

Rates start at US$325 per night, based on double occupancy.  This rate includes accommodations, daily breakfast, happy hour on the terrace and an evening dessert hour.
