New Wellness Journeys from Songtsam Hotels Champion the Region’s Indigenous Culture

Songtsam Resorts announces the implementation of the ancient Tibetan medical system of Sowa Rigpa into its wellness offerings, bringing holistic healing and mind-body harmony to resort guests across Tibet and Yunnan Province, China. True to the philosophy of ‘nature as medicine’ that inspires Songtsam’s approach to wellness and hospitality, Sowa Rigpa blends the natural energy of the Tibetan Plateau with cultural wisdom to lead guests to profound transformations through a variety of programming now available for guests.

Originating from within the Tibetan Plateau, Sowa Rigpa is a holistic medical system that has guided physical well-being, disease prevention, and healing for thousands of years. Combining nourishment and healing (Sowa) with wisdom and science (Rigpa), it emphasizes self-awareness and observation as pathways to understanding one’s health.

“Our Sowa Rigpa-inspired wellness experiences bring ancient Tibetan healing wisdom into the modern world,” said Mr. Baima Duoji, founder of Songtsam Resorts. “These programs not only celebrate a philosophy rooted in thousands of years of tradition but also offer guests a profound opportunity to connect with our culture and themselves. The tools they gain here empower them to foster a deeper connection to their inner being and the world, both on our resorts nestles across Tibet and Yunnan, and beyond.”

The new Sowa Rigpa experiences include:

  • Tibetan Medicinal Vajra Hammer Crafting – In Vajrayana Buddhism, the Vajra Hammer symbolizes the destruction of negative tendencies, including the “three poisons” of greed, anger, and ignorance, which Sowa Rigpa identifies as root causes of illness. This immersive, hands-on wellness experience, guided by skilled artisans, invites travelers to craft a Vajra hammer infused with the therapeutic aroma of Tibetan herbs, offering relief from fatigue, back pain, and motion sickness.
  • Five-Element Tibetan Incense Making – Rooted in Tibetan medicine, this experience explores the five great elements, which manifest within the body as both wisdoms and poisons. Combining the principles of Sowa Rigpa with natural aromatherapy, guests learn the art of incense making while meditating to mantras and visualizing colored light entering their head chakras. This practice fosters inner purification, deepens the connection with nature’s elements, and aligns internal energy.
  • Singing Bowl Healing Concert – Guided by healing specialists, this immersive sound therapy session blends the mesmerizing tones of singing bowls with warm oil therapy and sleep meditation. Designed for deep relaxation and holistic restoration, it helps alleviate insomnia, anxiety, and stress – ideal for guests preparing for or recovering from Songtsam’s high-altitude tours.

Songtsam’s new wellness offerings also include traditional Tibetan Hor Me therapy, which uses herbal compresses and medicinal oil massages to harmonize internal energy and alleviates anxiety and insomnia linked to “wind energy” imbalances. Before partaking, guests begin with a personalized constitution test to determine their ideal treatment. Additional therapies include a Tibetan medicinal bath, crafted from traditional herbal recipes to aid detoxification, enhance circulation, and relieve altitude sickness and fatigue, as well as the Himalayan-born Ku Nye massage, which blends Tibetan and Chinese techniques with muscle-relaxing oils for deep relaxation and healing.

These new offerings are now available to guests at seven Songtsam properties. In the Yunnan Region of China, these properties include Songtsam Linka Retreat Shangri-La, Songtsam Lodge Lijiang, Songtsam Lodge Bingzhongluo, and Songtsam Lodge Nujiang. In the Tibet Region, the offerings are available at Songtsam Linka Basong Tso, Songtsam Lodge Namcha Barwa, and Songtsam Linka Lhasa.
