Palácio Príncipe Real is a new concept of luxury hotel in the heart of Lisbon. Guests are pleasantly surprised when they enter the green gates to discover a tranquil garden and terrace with an Asian style infinity pool tucked away behind purple polygala.
Originally built in 1877 for the co-founder of one of Lisbon’s most well-known newspapers Diario de Noticias - the palacio passed from generation to generation to end up as the cherished home of Lisbon’s esteemed Teixeira da Mota family. Until 1980 the palacio was the center of their family and was well known in Lisbon high society for the generous parties hosted there.
Whilst many travel and pick up new hobbies after retiring from high powered careers, owners Miles and Gail Curley embarked on a journey to bring this building back to life in 2015. Having traveled extensively, the couple sought to restore an architectural gem whilst bringing another dimension of luxury hospitality to the Lisbon hotel scene, where guests are spoiled and quality means quality.
Today the Palácio offers 28 lovingly restored rooms and suites, all of which have been individually decorated to the highest standard - think stately home meets chic city townhouse. You will find rooms with original tiles (azulejos) and magnificent hand painted arabesque ceilings. You can also opt to sleep in a room which was the former family ballroom or soak up the views of our Jacaranda trees in a Drummonds roll top bath.
The “grande dame” of the building is it’s majestic stairway with the encompassing pink palatial walls and bright blue skylight. Although arguably the bespoke secret wine cellar underneath the stairs is also a strong contender…
A city hotel with a swimming pool? Yes please. Days here can be spent sipping rosé wine accompanied by birdsong. From sunbeds to sundowners our mixologists concoct our own signature cocktails using local spirits and ingredients from our herb garden.
Beyond our floral walls the city awaits you. Príncipe Real, biased as we are, is the epicenter of the city. It is an area where you not only have spectacular views down to the Avenida and beyond, but where there are many local restaurants, parks and unique shops. We are also in close proximity to many other great neighborhoods, but pack comfortable shoes – the hills and the cobbles make high heels a challenging option!
Early risers and late diners alike can enjoy the hotel’s all day a la carte breakfast concept. Our food philosophy is simple - we like honest, healthy food. The dishes prepared in our kitchen are made from high quality ingredients such as our own ecological olive oil and no refined sugars. We use local suppliers for our fruits and vegetables and our meats, fish and dairy also come from good sustainable sources.
