Built in 1931, Maid Marian 2 is one of the last surviving pre-World War Two motor yachts still cruising today. Thirty-three meters in length and owned by acclaimed film director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day, The Patriot, Midway, Those About To Die), the yacht offers a matchless opportunity to sail aboard a historic yacht that delivers modern comfort and complete seclusion.
As Maid Marian 2 starts operating in May for the 2025 charter season in Greece, here are five reasons she remains one of the most exceptional charter experiences in the Mediterranean:
Originally launched on the Hudson River as Cleopatra, Maid Marian 2 has lived many lives, from serving as a US Coast Guard patrol boat during the Second World War to becoming the private yacht of American socialite Ruth Nash Bliss on Palm Beach. Maid Marian 2 spent several seasons based at the Amanpuri Resort in Thailand before Roland Emmerich took ownership in 2007.
Today, she stands as one of the few motor yachts of her era, still functioning with her original lines, teak decks and historic character intact. For travelers who appreciate authenticity, Maid Marian 2 offers a glimpse into the golden age of yachting.
Maid Marian 2 accommodates up to 10 guests in five stylish cabins, each thoughtfully designed for ease and privacy. Whether traveling as a family or with friends, the yacht provides generous space to relax, with indoor and outdoor areas ideal for dining, unwinding and enjoying Aegean vistas.
Every charter is fully tailored to its guests. From bespoke itineraries to personalised menus prepared by the yacht’s chef, each detail is shaped around individual preferences and pace. Onboard amenities include a range of water toys such as SEABOB-Jets and Standup paddleboards, snorkeling gear and a tender to access beaches.
Emmerich commissioned award-winning interior designer John Teall to reimagine Maid Marian 2’s interiors when he acquired the yacht. Teall's design blends original Art Deco details with a modern palette, pairing polished brass with soft linens, warm woods and vintage-inspired lighting.
A later refit in 2021 expanded the upper deck to nearly 100 square metres, creating an open space for dining, sunbathing or simply gathering under the stars. Every space is designed with the same attention to detail you would expect from a high-end hotel, only afloat.
2025 marks 10 years since Maid Marian 2 started chartering full-time in the Greek isles, following her relocation from Thailand. Since then, she's been admired for her timeless elegance and offering one of the most distinctive charter endeavors in the region.
"There' s a magical feeling once you set foot on Maid Marian 2, which only intensifies once you set sail," says owner Roland Emmerich. "With the stunning backdrop of Greece and the azure Aegean, I am sure that you, your friends and family will enjoy making memories aboard this singular and luxurious classic yacht."
Maid Marian 2 offers a personalized way to appreciate Greece. Each charter's adapted to suit the travel style and preferences of guests onboard, whether sailing through the pine-covered Sporades, the classic Saronic Gulf, or exploring off-the-beaten-track.
Guests can relish quiet coves, family-run tavernas and slow afternoons anchored off secluded islands. Others may delight in cosmopolitan islands and lively summer nights. Maid Marian 2 offers the freedom to create the kind of Greek escape you truly have in mind.
