Rosewood Mayakoba Reopens After $1.6 Million Renovation
February 21, 2013
Led by renowned Mexican architect and interior designer, Jose Manuel Martinez Marquez, the renovation includes: the addition of 18 adjoining suites created from existing accommodations and restyled with artwork and furniture; a makeover of the resort's distinct dining venues – Casa Del Lago Restaurant, Agave Azul Sushi Bar & Tequila Library, and Punta Bonita; remodeling and expansion of the gym at Sense, a Rosewood Spa; and new on-property experiences including the addition of a Culture Concierge and Stargazing Storyteller, Mancation getaways, and a redesigned kids club.
NEW PLUSH AND PRIVATE SUITES
Rosewood Mayakoba now offers 18 connecting suites to make the resort an even more desirable destination catering to families or larger groups. The lavish suites sleep up to six guests each and are outfitted with high-end paintings and artwork by local artisans to reflect the destination's heritage and a peaceful, soothing environment.
NEW AMENITIES: CAPTURNG THE MAGIC OF THE MAYANS
In celebration of the resort's reopening, families, couples, and even bachelors can rejoice with Rosewood Mayakoba's new enthralling on-property amenities. The Culture Concierge, serving as the go-to for all things to do in the region and off-the-beaten-path activities will arrange day-tours upon request by prominent archeologists and historians who act as guides through the region's famed Mayan archeological sites of Maya communities. Perfect for family excursions, travelers can snorkel and dive the world's second largest reef, The Great Maya Reef, swim in Mexico's signature crystal-clear cenotes, or head to the natural adventure park Xplor to zipline, take a ride on motorized vehicles, swim through ancient caves and raft through subterranean caverns.
Situated along a mile-long arc of white sand in the Riviera Maya, Rosewood Mayakoba is the ultimate romantic escape. Allow the Culture Concierge to suggest a secluded beach for a walk, arrange a couple's massage to unwind, or plan a horseback-riding journey along the sparkling blue-green ocean. After a day at the beach, couples can retreat to one of the three newly built palapas situated throughout the resort, take a dip in their suite's plunge pool, refresh over cocktails on the waterfront terrace, take in the awe-inspiring views of the Caribbean Sea and end the night with a private beach dinner. For couples wanting a night out, the dynamic waterfront village of Playa del Carmen, boasts boutiques, restaurants, cafes and nightclubs.
Unique to Rosewood Mayakoba, the on-property biologist leads an EcoTour exploring the 61.75 acres of lagoon and 210 acres of mangroves while educating guests on the surrounding wildlife and natural vegetation. When the timing is right, the luckiest guests are invited to accompany him to the sea turtle nesting area. Parents can take a night off and leave their children at Rose Buds® Kids Club with the biologist who serves as the Stargazing Storyteller, providing evening entertainment for the young guests including storytelling on the beach, astronomy lessons, and authentic Mexican hot cocoa and cookies.
Home to the signature Greg Norman 7,000-yard, 18-hole golf course, El Camaleon, Rosewood Mayakoba is the ideal spot for a ‘mancation.' Guys can play a round of golf or participate in the Jim McLean Golf School, spend the day deep-sea sport fishing on the hunt for marlin, sailfish, mahi mahi, wahoo, grouper, snapper and kingfish, or participate in tequila tasting with Tequiliers at the Agave Azul Tequila Library and choose from a unique collection of cigars.
A RE-IMAGINED DINING DESTINATION
The resort's four dining venues, including the award-winning Casa del Lago restaurant, are unveiling reinvented menus featuring local interpretations of international cuisine. Overlooking the lagoon, Rosewood Mayakoba's signature restaurant Casa del Lago creates a serene ambiance for breakfast, lunch and dinner. A fresh new look is captured through vibrant corals, subtle beiges, and black designs detailing the ultra-plush fabric, along with pillows to accent each seat. Sitting atop the soothing main pool, the magnificent outdoor terrace is newly covered with a lattice clear glass roof, from which curtains can be dropped down during inclement weather to ensure that diners always enjoy the outdoor landscape. The Mediterranean inspired menu at Casa del Lago features inventive dishes including a ‘tiradito' of tuna with avocado and mango, lobster risotto with traditional Mayan corn, and their signature Paella. To top it off, a granite and glass cold buffet has been installed completing a very streamline look.
Home to the finest tequilas in the Riviera Maya, Agave Azul Sushi Bar & Tequila Library boasts a contemporary Mexican style using authentic stone and wood fragments and floor to ceiling glass panels that open onto the scenic deck overlooking the central lantern-lit lagoon. More than 120 bottles of superior tequila are put on display using backlit wooden library shelves against the main wall of the restaurant. The sushi bar maintains a prevailing design with granite and glass from which the new Master Sushi chef, Yuder Velazquez Coria, crafts signature rolls. The Tequiliers demonstrate the art of tequila tasting and the distillation process of the agave plant for inquisitive guests. Agave Azul's new menu features shitake gyozas in a soy reduction, octopus sunomono, blue fin tuna and grouper ceviche, Thai marinade BBQ chicken, miso butter Kobe beef, and Pad Thai made with tamarind, the popular Mexican fruit. At La Cava (“The Cave”), a selection of more than 800 extraordinary wines is housed within the glass wine cellar and can be complimented with a menu individually tailored by Executive Chef Carlos Hannon. La Cava is the resort's private dining room for two or for intimate celebrations for up to eight guests.
For guests in search of a more casual atmosphere, Punta Bonita is perfect for a light lunch or beachside family style dinner with expansive views of the Caribbean Sea. The relaxed welcoming ambiance is on display with an expanded deck for dining service as well as a new beachside bar conveniently placed steps from the shoreline. The restaurant menu offers classic Mexican favorites as well as an intriguing array of signature pizzas from the newly added brick oven.
A REVITALIZED SPA
Enclosed in the jungle's emerald embrace and infused with the nurturing soul of Mexico's Riviera Maya, the award-winning Sense, A Rosewood Spa® provides a new and distinctive approach to healing by offering curated treatments that call on traditional Mayan techniques to revitalize the mind, body, and spirit. This renovated oasis, situated on a private island designed around a cenote, one of the sacred water wells of the ancient Mayans, offers a surplus of amenities devoted to health and wellness, including a heated pool, saunas, steam rooms, Jacuzzi, cold plunge pool, secluded relaxation areas, as well as a state of the art gym, which doubled in size to more than 1,800-square-feet, and yoga and meditation classes located in a newly added palapa with a stretching area and TRX workout system.
Newly added treatments include:
• Mayan Equinox Ritual – This spa ritual has been designed to revitalize and prepare guests for a new beginning. The Mayan Equinox Ritual begins with a Temazcal session to balance body, mind and spirit. At the end of the ritual all guests will receive a pendant crafted in silver and monogramed with a designated Mayan name. 150 minutes. Available as a single ($450) or couples treatment ($900).
• Mayan Garden Detoxifying Ritual – During this physical and spiritual purifying treatment therapists thoughtfully select herbs from the on-property garden to prepare a customized curative detoxifying recipe rich in minerals and antioxidants. The experience starts with a body mask made of Mayan clay and herbs, ending with a relaxing stone massage. 150 minutes, $400
• New Moon Treatment – Ideal for expecting mothers, the treatment is inspired by the Mayan ceremony of the new moon honoring the Goddess of Moon and Fertility, “Ixchel.” This treatment is designed to relax and protect the new mother, beginning with a rose infusion bath and finishes with a customized prenatal massage. The mother to be will receive a silver crafted pendant engraved with the Mayan horoscope sign of the new baby. 120 minutes, $350 per person.
