Scottsdale's Hotel Valley Ho Wins Good Earthkeeping Award
The awards luncheon was held on Thursday, December 2 at the Intercontinental Montelucia Resort & Spa.

The Good Earthkeeping Award recognizes one small and one large lodging property that have each developed a culture toward integrating environmental management practices that improve everyday operations and the bottom line, while maintaining quality service and meeting guest expectations.

Hotel Valley Ho has a number of green initiatives. In-room linens are cleaned with non-harmful hydrogen peroxide instead of bleach; no herbicides or pesticides are used for landscaping; cooking oil is recycled; all shower heads, toilets, and faucets are low-flow; local ingredients are used whenever possible; and an average of five tons of material is recycled each month. Additionally, over 20,000 tons of waste was saved from landfills when Westroc restored the hotel instead of tearing it down, prior to its 2005 re-opening.

The latest initiative at Hotel Valley Ho was that it became the first property in Arizona to join the Clean the World program, along with its sister property, Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain. Clean the World is a non-profit charity organization that sterilizes and recycles in-room soap, shampoo, and other amenities for use in domestic homeless shelters and over 50 developing countries around the world. The soap provided reduces waste, prevents disease, and even saves lives.

“We are so grateful to be recognized by the Arizona Hotel and Lodging Association for our environmental efforts”, stated Andrew Chippindall, general manager of Hotel Valley Ho. “Being green has been a real priority for us since Westroc purchased the hotel and began re-construction in 2004, and we continue to seek new ways to lessen our impact on the environment.”

The “Stars of the Industry” awards program was created more than 40 years ago by the American Hotel & Lodging Association to recognize outstanding accomplishments in the lodging industry. While the categories have evolved over the years, the concept is still the same - to honor lodging employees and properties that best symbolize the quality service of the industry.
