During the 1950's, adventurer and aviator, Rémy de Haenen was the first man to land a plane on the island, he then decided to build his house on the rocky promontory off the bay in St. Jean.
Captivated by the beauty of St. Barthélemy, he noticed a beautiful and unique location, and with the help of some inhabitants, built on its remains and the first hotel on the island was born: Eden Rock.

Rémy invited all his friends from Hollywood, and “the hiding place of Rémy” soon became the meeting place of all the best celebrities, such as Greta Garbo and Howard Hughes. The hotel and island continued to develop, leading to the iconic reputation it holds today.
