Stratton Celebrates Spring Skiing with Specials
February 24, 2015
Roger Sands
Skiers welcome spring skiing as their last hurrah before putting away the boards and bringing out the golf clubs. New England offers some of the finest spring skiing venues in the world as luxurious resorts roll out the red carpet for the outdoor enthusiast. Not only do these opulent resorts provide a substantial snow base and plenty of spring skiing activities -- including Sloppy Slalom races and slopeside scavenger hunts -- but also feature exquisite accommodations and gourmet dining, ideally suited for today's discerning skiers.
Stratton Mountain Resort, conveniently located in southern Vermont, has always been known as a spring skier's paradise. Near record snowfalls thus far this year guarantee fabulous spring skiing conditions. Take some morning runs in Stratton's Sun Bowl followed by apres ski activities on the deck of Grizzly's. Conveniently located in the Main Base Area next to the Gondola, Grizzly's is open for lunch, dinner and late night with draft beer specials, wood-fired pizza and a whole menu of tasty fare. In addition to Grizzly's, Stratton offers a number of restaurants and pubs that are ideally suited for the many apres ski activities that accompany spring skiing.
February snowstorms have delivered soft snow, and March will follow-up with non-stop fun. Beginning March 15, skiers can save 30 percent by staying three nights or more. March means longer days and plenty of fresh snow, hot deals and a triple-play of big events. It starts with the Vermont Open (March 12-15), a celebration of snowboarding history, tradition and progression with the half pipe, big air and banked slalom events for pros and aspiring pros alike. The 24 Hours of Stratton (March 21-22) challenges individuals and teams to ski or ride all night and all day to rack up as many vertical feet as possible – all while raising funds for the charitable works of the Stratton Foundation. Marchdi Gras (March 28-29) warms up the resort with music, food, drink, dancing and revelry with a southern flair. It's a little bit of New Orleans in Vermont.
One word aptly describes Stratton: "Wow." A charming village serves as the centerpiece for Stratton, offering an array of curio shops, restaurants, and a spa that is just steps from the Gondola. The non-denominational Chapel of the Snows, located directly across from the village, has surely served as the focal point for many Vermont post cards.
Food is serious business at Stratton, and guests have plenty of dining options at their disposal. Table 43.1 serves seasonal Vermont cuisine in a family-friendly atmosphere. As on any family table, sharing plates is encouraged. Small plates are made for tasting with a focus on locally sourced ingredients. Meals pair perfectly with a seasonally-rotating selection of Vermont Craft Beers and cocktails made with Vermont's finest artisan spirits. Specialties include Lamb, herb encrusted chops, grafton cheddar grits, seasonal veggies or Faroe Island Salmon pancetta, celery root puree and a lemon butter sauce.
Accommodations run the gamut at Stratton Mountain Resort, each designed to offer style and convenience for skiers. Distinctive properties include the Long Trail Penthouse, which provides the ultimate home with a view. Located on the commons, the Long Trail Penthouse features ice skating, fire pits and family activities. This two- level one-of-a-kind condominium includes the conveniences of a private elevator, heated underground parking, a Jacuzzi, guest lockers, and heated outdoor pool and hot tub. Accessed by a private elevator, the 3,500-square foot, two-floor Penthouse boasts five bedrooms, each with a private bath. The property affords guests spectacular views of the mountain.
No visit to Stratton is complete without the indulgence of a visit to the Day Spa at Stratton Village. After a long day on the slopes, an Old Smoothie Exfoliating Treatment comes highly recommended. A salt scrub massage combination will bring back the glow to your entire body leaving you feeling restored and hydrated. Need a little more pampering? The World Cup Package includes a Buckshot Hot Stone massage, or a Solstice Renewal Treatment, along with a Lift Line Anti-Aging Facial, Spa Manicure and Spa Pedicure.
Of course, the mountain takes center stage at Stratton. And what a mountain it is. Known for its wide, perfectly groomed cruising trails, skiers will find plenty of elbow room as they carve their way down 2,003 vertical feet of excitement. With 97 trails spanning 670 acres, including snow-filled gladed terrain, Stratton offers challenges for all ability levels. In addition to skiing, Stratton offers snowshoeing, dog sledding, tubing, ice skating, snowmobile rides, and cross country skiing.
Stratton has long been known as one of the most luxurious ski resorts in all of New England. By offering superior spring skiing year in, year out, Stratton should be on the “must see” list for skiers who want to end their season in style.
