Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort Honored at World Travel Awards 2012
Tabacón Grand Spa Thermal Resort in Costa Rica, the luxurious resort in the shadow of the active Arenal Volcano, recently took top honors at the World Travel Awards, a red-carpet gala held at Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort Villages & Spa. Winning in three categories, the five-star, carbon-neutral resort was named Mexico & Central America's Leading Luxury Resort and Leading Green Hotel, as well as Costa Rica’s Leading Spa Resort. Considered the “Oscars of the travel industry,” the event draws a distinguished group of leading travel industry executives and shines a spotlight on the travel brands that have made the greatest contribution to the industry in the last year.

"We are delighted to be recognized in three prestigious categories,” says Uwe Wagner, the resort’s longtime CEO and architect of myriad resort enhancements and “green” initiatives that attest to Tabacón’s prominence among Costa Rican resorts. Uwe credits the resort’s impressive WTA showing to its collection of lavish new suites, many with views of the Costa Rican rainforest. Featuring furnishings hand-crafted by Costa Rican artisans, the suites are designed to promote relaxation and well-being.

Receipt of the award as “Leading Green Hotel” in Mexico & Central America is particularly satisfying, notes Uwe. “We have been certified carbon neutral since 2009 and were only the second hotel in the world to receive the Luxury Eco Certification by Leading Hotels of the World and Sustainable Travel,” says Uwe, who helped to put Tabacón at the forefront of Costa Rica’s sustainability efforts. The resort’s passion for sustainability has long found favor with guests, who gravitate to its thermal spring-fed waterfalls, streams, pools and ponds, as well as its award-winning The Grand Spa and lush Shangri-La Gardens, a romantic tropical oasis for adults.
