The Insider List to Swiss Christmas Markets

The Insider List to Swiss Christmas Markets
Markets vary in scope from month-long big city markets to weekend events in tiny villages. In this newsletter, we put a spotlight on some smaller markets worth visiting.

Monastic

Einsiedeln – November 28 to December 6.

Nestled into the mountains that cluster at the foot of Lake Zurich, Einsiedeln has a lovely Christmas market. The village is all aglow when market traders set up their christmas stands on the town's "Klosterplatz". Delightfully illuminated houses, the fragrance of hot mulled wine and punch, as well as the charmingly lit monastery draw visitors from all over the world to this famous place of pilgrimage.

Magical

Stein am Rhein – December 1 to 31.

The picturesque town of Stein am Rhein sits at the point where Lake Constance meets the Rhine River. Famous for its well-preserved old town, featuring painted facades and half-timbered houses, Stein am Rhein is a lively and very charming small town that is well-worth a visit at Christmas time. Every year, the medieval town center of Stein am Rhein recounts a well-known fairy tale like Snow White or Little Red Riding Hood with decorations, window displays and illuminations.

Intimate

Bremgarten – December 3 to 6.

Small, but just perfect, the Christmas market in the charming old town of Bremgarten creates a festive atmosphere with the seasonal decorations. In addition to an array of over 300 high quality stalls selling local produce and gifts, the "Christchindlimärt" features a program of musical performances and Christmas attractions. A white horse-drawn carriage, carol singing and an enormous Christmas tree really get people in the mood for the forthcoming festivities.
