Located on the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Malta is finding itself in the midst of a tourism boom. Impeccably crystal-clear waters, craggy coastlines and charming villages each give a unique Maltese charm and a reason to visit. Just outside the fortified gates of Valletta stands a living proof of that. A limestone landmark that has been welcoming travellers to the island for nearly 80 years– The Phoenicia Malta.
Its walls are filled with stories from the past, like a living documentary, and the hotel’s history goes hand in hand with the continent’s. After suffering severe damage from the bombing of the Second World War, the reconstruction that quickly followed turned it into what we continue seeing today–a part of Malta’s public and diplomatic life. The Grand Ballroom was a centre of attention, hosting receptions and social gatherings, attended by many prominent celebrities and historical figures throughout the years, including the late Queen Elizabeth II. Today, that legacy continues in a new chapter for the hotel. The Phoenicia Malta joined The Leading Hotels of the World in 2016 and has since received a Michelin Key, sharpening their position as one of the places to visit in 2026.
A unique resort in a historic core
In a capital known for its dense stone buildings, what The Phoenicia Malta offers is unique–an immersion in nature steps away from the city, magnificent views of the Grand Harbour, and a piece of history that can be felt.
Stepping into the hotel’s gardens, it’s easy to feel like you’re transported into a completely new place. Stretching across the Valletta peninsula, they are a place for enjoyment. Long, slow afternoons. Morning coffee with a view. Evening relaxation. All within the historic core, literally steps away from the city. It’s not unusual to see organised yoga workouts or meditations, a unique offering the hotel provides in the spring and summer months. Walking a bit further, you may find yourself lounging next to the infinity pool sitting directly along the 16th-century fortifications, with one of the best views on the island. For foodies, this is the place to be. Spring through autumn, the Bastion Pool Bar & Restaurant serves Mediterranean dishes and sushi beside the water.
Wellness beneath the bastions
Beneath it lies Phoenicia Spa & Wellness, a 1,200 square metre relaxation space that carries an unexpected story. During excavations for the spa, one of Valletta’s original 16th-century defensive walls was discovered. Rather than removing it, the original plans were redesigned so the spa could be built around this historic structure.
Named the Best Spa Hotel at the International Hotel Awards 2024–2025, it incorporates multiple treatment rooms, as well as a hammam, a salt room, a gym and a heated indoor pool that runs alongside the historic stone walls.
A Social Centre of Valletta
Inside the hotel, the Palm Court Lounge continues to beam with guests from morning until evening. Over time, the lounge has become a meeting point for both travellers and Maltese residents, continuing the hotel’s long tradition as part of the social life of Valletta.
Contessa, the flagship restaurant, was reimagined in 2023. In winter, it functions as a bright conservatory, while in summer it opens into a terrace overlooking the hotel’s gardens. The menu revolves around Southern Mediterranean cuisine, emphasising seasonal seafood and regional ingredients. For gourmands, the Beefbar brings a contemporary international dining concept, while mixology enthusiasts can enjoy the hotel’s cocktail bar offering a more intimate setting.
An Enduring Landmark
Nearly eighty years after opening, The Phoenicia Malta continues to shape the arrival experience of Valletta. Over time, the hotel has remained closely connected to the culture of the island itself; in many ways, reflecting its character. A place where centuries of history remain present, yet continue to evolve with each generation of visitors. Standing at the edge of Valletta, it remains both a landmark and a starting point for exploring the island.
