Trapani: A Favorite Italian Destination on the West Coast of Sicily
February 3, 2014
Trapani attracts visitors from all over Europe to come and spend time relaxing at resorts of Segesta, Erice, and the Egadi islands. The region has a lovely atmosphere about it, friendly people, and a special unforgettable easy style of life. The main town and capital of the province is the city of Trapani.
About Trapani city
Trapani is known as an important fishing area and the port of Trapani is the gateway to the not far off Egadi Islands. This town suffered heavy bombing during the Second World War, but rebuilt and grown into a large sprawling city that now extends all the way to Monte San Giuliano. Much of the economy is provided by industries specialising in fishing, tourism, marble, coral exports, salt and wine production. Trapani grown grapes produce an excellent Marsala wine.
What to see and do
Taking a walk through the old city, mostly erected during mediaeval times, and see many baroque style historic buildings.
• Visit the ‘Madonna di Trapani' housing a marble statue of the Madonna, originally dating back as far as 1315 but rebuilt in 1760. There are several churches worth a look at built in the Sicilian Baroque style of architecture.
• Take a cable car and visit Monte Erice, filled with cobbled streets and a medieval castle. From there if the weather is clear, Tunisia and Africa are seen.
• There are beaches to lie and soak up the sun with the Marausa beach only 9km south of the city.
There is a variety of pesto named after Trapani, called pesto alla trapenese which is made with almonds and not with pine nuts as used in Ligurian pesto.
Villa Atalaya
A lovely place to stay, Villa Atalaya
https://www.italianrentals4u.com/Villa-Atalaya.html
The Villa Atalaya presents the perfect holiday accommodation for spending leisurely time in the Sicilian countryside. This two level villa has perfect accommodation for up to twelve people with four double and two twin bedrooms. Four bathrooms adequately serve the well-appointed sleeping area which is reached from the lower level by a stone staircase.
The ambience and feel of this rustic villa is further created in the downstairs area by the unusual design of the open plan lounge. There is a magnificent fireplace placed at an angle that keeps the room cosy and warm on cold nights, and the large area has plenty of space in it for all the residents to comfortably sit, chat, and enjoy themselves.
The large kitchen is ideal for cooking, and furnished with a table big enough for small groups to sit and enjoy their meals together. Otherwise eat at the long table outside with its two benches, and then relax on the outside sofa and armchairs in another part of the outside area. Admire the scenery around the villa while sitting there and take in the sight of the sun dipping and the night beginning to darken the sky.
