Although the United States is a huge country, business travel is mostly concentrated in a handful of states. According to the 2026 economic impact study from the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), California, New York, Florida, Texas and Illinois brought in the most business travel spending in 2024, across hotels, flights, restaurants and events.
However, outside those five states, there are cities with strong reasons to visit. Columbus hosts hundreds of conventions a year, and Pittsburgh is home to a cluster of robotics and AI companies. Meanwhile, Greenville sits at the center of South Carolina’s manufacturing industry, and Milwaukee has an award-winning convention center.
Have you ever thought about visiting these destinations? Here you’ll find the main features of each city, the industries where each one stands out and planning tips, such as using online booking engine software to simplify the whole process.
Ohio’s capital has a packed convention calendar. The 2026 mid-year report from Experience Columbus notes that, between January and June 2026, Columbus hosted 261 conventions and major events. For companies, these events make it easier to schedule meetings with clients and partners in the same week.
When the workday wraps up, the city has options for ending the day over a good dinner. The Short North neighborhood starts right across from the Greater Columbus Convention Center, with more than 300 businesses, including restaurants and bars.
Pennsylvania falls outside the five states with the highest business travel spending, but the Pittsburgh region is home to more than 120 robotics companies and another 120 AI companies, according to April 2026 data from the Pittsburgh Robotics Network. For companies in the sector, that concentration clearly means plenty of potential clients and partners in a single city.
This specialization in robotics and AI also shows up on the convention calendar. In September 2026, the city hosted Robotics & AI Discovery Day, with more than 250 exhibitors. At the end of that same month, IROS, an international robotics conference, also took place. Two events like these in the same month are a valuable opportunity to meet with suppliers and potential clients.
Greenville sits at the center of South Carolina’s manufacturing industry. Nearly half of the state’s manufacturing jobs are in the Upstate, the northwestern region that includes Greenville, according to the 2026 economic impact study by South Carolina Manufacturers and Commerce and the University of South Carolina.
Greenville is also home to the South Carolina Manufacturing Conference and Expo. Events like this bring plant managers from across the Southeast together with their suppliers.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin’s largest city, has a convention center recognized by the trade show industry. In 2026, EXHIBITOR, a magazine that covers trade shows, named the Baird Center one of its Centers of Excellence. The center has 52 meeting rooms and 300,000 square feet of exhibit space in a single continuous hall.
One of the quirks of the city’s infrastructure is that several hotels connect to the Baird Center through enclosed skywalks. Examples include the Hilton Milwaukee and the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee. That lets you go from your room to your work sessions without stepping out into the cold.
In a new city, trip planning becomes key. Before you book anything, check:
Once you have that info, all that’s left is booking the hotel. At this point, Engine.com is a platform that lets you book room blocks, compare different options and, in most cases, receive proposals from hotels the same day.
California and New York will likely stay at the top of business travel spending, but that measures how much is spent, not where the opportunities are. In Columbus, Pittsburgh, Greenville and Milwaukee, the clients and the conventions are already there. If your next trip takes you to one of these four cities, request hotel proposals through Engine so you only have to worry about meeting the goals of your trip.
