Barcelona has officially been named the European Capital of Christmas for 2026 and there is no better place to celebrate, than at El Palace Barcelona, the city's most festive luxury hotel and widely considered one of the city's signature festive experiences.
Barcelona was awarded the honour of “European Capital of Christmas for 2026” for the city’s renowned festive programme, Catalan Christmas traditions, cultural events, and commitment to sustainability and community participation, including, historic Christmas traditions, including the Fira de Santa Llúcia, one of Europe's oldest Christmas markets, innovative Christmas lighting and public art, cultural programming across the city's neighbourhoods, and environmental initiatives aimed at making festive celebrations more sustainable.
This December 2026, Barcelona is expected to have an expanded festive programme to mark this unique honour, with further details to be announced in the lead-up but initial details released include an expanded city-wide Christmas programme, building on its existing Festival de Nadal (Christmas Festival), with free performances including music, dance, circus, theatre, and family activities in public squares and cultural venues across the city. Barcelona's major market including Fira de Santa Llúcia, the Sagrada Família Christmas Market, the Port Vell Christmas Market, and the Gran Via Kings' Fair will remain central to the celebrations and are expected to receive additional visibility as part of the title year. Enhanced Christmas lighting public decorations, and festive installations will be lit with the aim of creating a welcoming atmosphere throughout different neighbourhoods.
El Palace Barcelona, the city’s first five-star hotel has long established itself as the pinnacle destination for the holiday season, with its rotating creative activations and iconic red and gold festive decorations which alight the buildings Neoclassical interiors, exteriors and Grand Hall. Recently voted Barcelona’s Best City Hotel in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards, El Palace Barcelona will be welcoming guests for the festive season from 19th November as the holiday celebrations begin.
New for 2026: Santa’s House Pop-Up – From the North Pole to Barcelona
New for 2026, El Palace Barcelona will be transforming the Rooftop Garden into Santa’s House. The wooden central Pergola will transport guests into the Santa’s cozy and warm woodland-style room hidden behind snow-dusted fir trees and sparkling fairy lights. The enchanting festive retreat will be filled with traditional garlands, and ornaments, wrapped presents, toy filled shelves, and faux roaring fires to along with seasonal music, scents of pine and cinnamon, and soft lighting to create a magical and memorable experience for visitors of all ages. Dishes served will include a special menu of typical winter holiday dishes. Santa’s House will be open from November 19th to January 5th, Monday to Sunday for lunch and dinner.
The City’s Most Popular Festive Activity: El Palace Barcelona’s Rooftop Christmas Cinema
From 19th November, El Palace Barcelona will be bringing back the city’s first Rooftop Christmas Cinema with a new programming for the 2026 season. El Palace Barcelona invites guests to transport themselves to a charming alpine-style garden with panoramic views of the city without the alpine chill. This cosy open-air cinema features four private mini chalets, complete with blankets, hot water bottles, popcorn, festive sweets, and the option of a St. Germain cocktail or seasonal hot chocolate with all the festive trimmings. A curated selection of holiday classics will be screened twice daily, including Jingle All the Way and Miracle on 34th Street (Monday), Home Alone 1 and Office Christmas Party (Tuesday), Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas and Scrooged (Wednesday), Polar Express and White Christmas (Thursday), The Grinch and Bridget Jones’s Diary (Friday), Home Alone 2 and Trade Places (Saturday), and Elf and A Christmas Story (Sunday). A family friendly screening will be held at 18:00, followed by a screening for all ages at 21:00.
Calling all Gingerbread Architects – Gingerbread House Masterclasses:
Following a successful launch and sold-out attendance in 2025, El Palace Barcelona will be bringing back its Gingerbread House Masterclasses on the Rooftop Garden. The fun and whimsical holiday workshops will guide guests through a step by step through how to construct a classical house inspired by Hansel and Gretel, from initial construction to sugary landscaping, to exterior decoration to bring all guests’ sweet dreams to life using cookies, icing, and a variety of sweets. The masterclasses will take place surrounded by snow-dusted fir trees and fairy lights in Santa’s House, a testament to Santa’s love for candy. 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 22, 23 December from 10am – 12pm.
Festive Afternoon Tea & Christmas Carols
From 19th November to 4th January, El Palace Barcelona will present a festive edition of its signature Afternoon Tea, served daily between 11:00 and 18:00 in the Grand Hall surrounded by festive decorations and one of the city’s most iconic red, green and gold 6-meter (20 foot) Christmas trees. Guests can enjoy sweet and savoury delights accompanied by live piano music every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Santa Claus will make a special guest appearance at Afternoon Tea every Saturday and Sunday from 5th – 20th December to greet children, collect letters with all their hearts and desires, and check if they are on the naughty or nice list.
On 23rd December at 17:00, singer Nika Mills, baritone Joan J. Ramos, pianist Graham Lister, and violinist Sergey Maiboroda, will perform a repertoire of traditional, international, and local Christmas carols.
Festive Dining at El Palace Barcelona
This holiday season, El Palace Barcelona continues its renowned banquet tradition by offering bespoke festive tasting menus in the Grand Hall, Gran Via ballroom, and the Rooftop Garden for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day lunch, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Eve. menu features a refined selection of seasonal dishes including Beef Tenderloin, Crab Ravioli, Chargrilled Suckling Lamb, Roasted Sea Bass, paired with carefully selected D.O. national wines, followed by traditional Catalan sweets including nougat and neulas (traditional Catalan biscuits)
Zambomba de Jerez – A Festive Andalusian Christmas Celebration
On 14th December at 20:00, El Palace Barcelona brings back one of southern Spain’s most joyful and vibrant holiday traditions, the Zambomba de Jerez. This spirited evening features live Andalusian Christmas carols, festive flamenco rhythms, and traditional dishes from the region.
