LIVINGSTONE ISLAND

Livingstone Island (open to visitors from June until mid-March), is a World Heritage Site, and plays a major role in the history of Zambia and Southern African early exploration. David Livingstone, the missionary explorer, first viewed the Mosi-Oa-Tunya (“The Smoke that Thunders”) from Livingstone Island, on November 16, 1855, with the help of local tribesmen using dugout canoes. This is where he famously said, “Scenes so lovely must have been gazed on by angels in their flight.” He later named the cataract The Victoria Falls after Queen Victoria. Livingstone Island was opened in 1992 to provide exclusive and unique picnics on the edge of the Falls. Given its history and geography, it is considered one of the prime spots in the world for picnicking.

TONGABEZI LODGE

Tongabezi Lodge is a romantic hideaway on the banks of the Zambezi River just upstream of Victoria Falls, comprising a selection of houses and cottages, each beautifully styled with furniture and embellishments from all over Africa. Guests can dine beside the river or on their private terrace. Privately owned and run, Tongabezi combines an exclusive ambience with the legendary warmth and hospitality of the people of Zambia.
Chalets come with valets. Typical is the Bird House featuring an open-air sunken bath and a private terrace for dining under the stars. Guests can canoe on the river, join game drives, bush walks and enjoy sunset boat trips. Luxury camps such as Tongabezi provide a perfect base to explore Victoria Falls and the stunning African bush surrounding it. Fully- inclusive rates for the Bird House start from $620 per person per night.
