What Hawai‘i’s Luxury Rentals Reveal About the New Traveler

As travelers look to escape colder weather, Hawai'i Life’s latest booking data offers an inside look at how affluent travelers are rethinking their time on island, opting for shorter, more frequent getaways that prioritize privacy, personalized experiences and making the most of their time away. The data offers a timely perspective on evolving luxury travel habits and what high-end travelers are prioritizing as they plan their winter escapes.

For affluent travelers, luxury in Hawai'i may be shifting from the traditional weeklong escapes to more frequent, high-value trips that prioritize private, connection and making the most of time away.

New booking data from Hawai'i Life, the state’s leading luxury brokerage and vacation rentals specialist, points to a notable shift in how high-end travelers are visiting the islands. Across its $1,500+ per-night vacation rental portfolio, reservations increased 14% YOY, while booking nights grew just 7%. At the same time, the average stay shortened from 7.1 nights to 6.7 nights.

The change is about more than the length of a stay. Increasingly, luxury travelers are looking for a private home base that allows them to experience Hawai’i on their own terms. Through private chefs, in-home spa treatments, curated excursions and dedicated concierge support, Hawai'i Life tailors each guest experience, allowing more access to the destination in a shorter timeframe. The appeal is the privacy and sense of place, paired with the personalized service and convenience traditionally associated with a luxury resort.

The shift also points to a broader evolution in luxury travel: when time is the ultimate luxury, travelers are prioritizing fewer compromises over longer stays. With luxury real estate and vacation-rental expertise across the islands, Hawai‘i Life has a unique view into what affluent travelers are booking, how long they’re staying and what they are prioritizing once they arrive.

A couple of notable rentals include:
