Scottish planters developed this working 1600-acre estate, high in the Himalayas near Sikkim, in 1860.
Their home, lovingly restored, is now run as an all-inclusive six-unit retreat by current owner and General Manager Husna-Tara Prakash (the Prakashes are India's leading chaiwala, tea-planting, family). The Planter's Suite, with working fire and historic East India company maps, looks across to Sikkim: all rooms have embroidered linens and Darjeeling Green Tea toiletries. Friendly staff, stunning mountain and valley views, great star-gazing and hiking at all levels. Take a day-long tea tour - or an advanced-level river hike along, and deliberately through, the snow-fed Rung Dung river. Darjeeling, in the Himalayan foothills, is at an elevation of almost 7,000 ft. There are daily Jet Airways and Indian Airlines flights from Kolkata (45 mins), Guwahati (30 mins) and New Delhi (2 hours) to Bagdogra. Glenburn is a two and a half hour drive from the airport. The Jet Airways flight from Delhi stops at Guwahati on alternate days and guests are advised to take the direct connection (Delhi-Bagdogra-Delhi) which considerably shortens the flying time. Glenburn Estate is located at Darjeeling (West Bengal, India). It is a 1,600 acre estate with breathtaking views of the Kanchenjunga Mountain Range, stretches from an elevation of 3,700 feet, all the way down to the sandy banks of the two snow-fed Himalayan rivers that meander through it. Camp out, river raft, hike through the forest, wander around Darjeeling Town, explore the estate in a four-wheel drive vehicle, or simply take in the sun! Visit The Glenburn Campsite for a picnic, barbeque or an overnight stay at The Glenburn Lodge, by the river Rungeet. With acres of beautiful forests to explore, riverside and other in-house activities, and Darjeeling and Sikkim on our doorstep, a week at Glenburn could be truly relaxing, or action-packed with adventure.
