Located just 75 miles east of the state capital of Atlanta, Lake Oconee is the second largest lake in the state, boasting an impressive 376 miles of picturesque shoreline at full capacity. Lake Oconee was created in 1979, via an impoundment of the Oconee River by the Georgia Power Company, in an effort to boost the state's hydroelectric power production capabilities. Today, Lake Oconee is famous for housing more fish per square acre than any other lake in Georgia, including large mouth bass, bream, catfish, crappie and striped bass hybrids. This serene and secluded escape also offers visitors a wealth of other recreational opportunities, including kayaking, canoeing, waterskiing and 99 holes of championship caliber golf.
