Planning a Luxury Italian Getaway Around an Engagement Proposal

Planning a Luxury Italian Getaway Around an Engagement Proposal

Villa del Balbianello, the Lake Como estate managed by Italy's national trust, is closed on Mondays and Wednesdays and admits visitors only with a ticket booked online. In peak season those tickets sell out weeks ahead. A proposal planned for its terrace on the wrong weekday fails before anyone has taken the box out of a pocket.

Lake Como Opening Hours

Balbianello opens from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. between mid-March and the end of December. The last entry to the park is at 5 p.m., and the villa's interior can be seen only on a guided tour of about 45 minutes. Garden tickets cost €14, and a garden ticket with the guided tour costs €25. The trust advises tour visitors to arrive by 3:30 p.m., or by 2:30 p.m. from November, and members of the trust enter free.

Because tickets are sold only online and sell out in peak months, the villa date should be fixed before the flights are booked. The hours also rule out a sunset proposal on the grounds for most of the season, since summer sunsets on the lake come hours after closing. A late-afternoon slot on a weekday is the practical choice. Couples who want the evening light can stage the moment at their hotel instead. On the western shore, one option is Passalacqua in Moltrasio, an 18th-century villa where 2026 booking sites list rooms from about $1,300 a night.

The Amalfi Coast Road in Summer

The coast road between Vietri sul Mare and Positano is under a license plate restriction in peak months. Between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., cars may use the road only on alternate days according to the last digit of the plate. The rule applies to rental cars, and fines of €87 to €344 are sent to the registered owner, which for a rental car is the agency. Motorcycles and scooters are exempt.

In Ravello, the Terrace of Infinity at Villa Cimbrone is a common proposal spot. It is a natural balcony about 400 meters above the sea, lined with marble busts, and early morning or late afternoon visits avoid the midday crowds. Photographers who work the terrace favor the hour before sunset for its light, while a morning visit gives the couple more privacy in the gardens on the walk out.

Le Sirenuse in Positano, family-owned since 1951 with 58 rooms, listed 2026 rates from $839 to more than $21,000 a night depending on season and room type. October rates at the Caruso hotel in Ravello were close to $1,000 a night in the same year's booking data.

The Ring in a Carry-On Bag

The ring belongs in hand luggage, in its box, and out of any trouser pocket that will pass through a metal detector, since a ring in a checked bag is out of its owner's control from the check-in desk to the baggage carousel.

Shape changes how much padding the box needs. A princess cut ring has 4 pointed corners, which chip more easily than any other part of a stone, and pear and marquise shapes have the same weakness at their tips. A round stone in a low setting tolerates a crowded bag better.

Venice Access Rules for Day Visitors

Venice charges a daytripper fee on 60 peak days between April 3 and July 26, 2026, mostly Fridays to Sundays, for entry between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The fee is €5 when booked at least 4 days ahead and €10 after that. Visitors with a hotel booking in the city do not pay, because their hotel bill already includes a lodging tax, but they still have to sign up and carry a QR code for spot checks at the city's 7 access points. The fine for skipping the process is €50 to €300.

A couple staying in Milan or on the mainland and proposing in Venice on a Saturday in June is a day visitor under these rules. Staying 1 night in the city removes the fee, though the registration still applies. Children under 14 are exempt, which matters only for proposals that include family, and the registration is done on the city's official access site in several languages.

Customs Paperwork and Insurance

A ring bought in the United States counts as a personal effect on the way home and does not have to be declared, provided the traveler can show it left the country with them. US Customs and Border Protection offers a registration form for that purpose, number 4457, which a traveler takes to a local customs office with the ring before departure. An officer checks the item against the form and signs it, and the signed copy stays valid for later trips as long as the details on it remain legible.

Travelers who skip the form can carry proof they already own the item, such as a receipt or an appraisal. The customs agency also suggests a photograph of the traveler wearing or holding the piece, taken before leaving. The distinction matters because returning residents have an $800 duty-free allowance for goods bought abroad, and a documented personal effect does not count against it. The ring should also be appraised and insured before the flight.

City Taxes in Rome and Florence

Italian cities charge an overnight city tax per person, per night, and the rate rises with the hotel's star rating. Rome charges €10 per person per night in 5-star hotels in 2026 and taxes only the first 10 nights of a stay. Florence charges about €8 at the same level and stops after 7 nights. The tax is paid directly to the hotel, which passes it on to the city. A couple spending 5 nights at a 5-star hotel in Rome therefore pays €100 in tax on top of the room rate. Other cities set their own caps, usually somewhere between 5 and 14 nights, and Venice's lodging tax is the reason overnight guests there are spared the day-visitor fee.

Shoulder Months on the Coast and the Lake

For the Amalfi Coast, the best time to visit is June or September, the months immediately before and after the summer peak. Crowds are thinner in early June, before Italian schools close for the summer, and in September the sea is at its warmest after 3 months of sun. Both months still draw heavy traffic, and hotels fill early, so a proposal booked for September is best reserved in spring. Lake Como winds down sooner in autumn, so a proposal there is better placed in May or early September. Balbianello closes entirely from January to mid-March.

A Tuesday in Late September

The couple leaves Amalfi on the 2:30 bus and reaches Villa Cimbrone a little after 4. The ring is in a padded box in an inside jacket pocket, the customs form is folded inside a passport, and the garden tickets are on a phone. The terrace has 12 people on it, most of them facing the sea. One of them kneels next to the 3rd marble bust from the left, and the only planning left to do is the dinner reservation.
